Don’t Be Sad For Me, Be Mad With Me
When we say we don’t like nice guys, we don’t mean we want assholes. We mean we need someone with substance that challenges us and the world where it matters. You should definitely be a kind person (because that’s the bare minimum) and instead of sympathizing with us all the time, start helping us change the systems that oppress us all.
I don’t need you to feel bad or guilty that because of the statistics about men, women don’t feel safe at night. I don’t need you to feel bad for me at all. I want you to do something about it. Call out your friend making the slightly sexist joke because every joke matters. Call out your teacher when they are biased towards one gender or ethnicity because every microaggression affects someone.
Things add up and you feeling sorry for us adds up to us feeling uncomfortable around you because you treat us like glass about to break.
Let me break something down for you. Glass is about to break because we are going to break it shattering the glass ceilings and that’s a good thing. Don’t be sad for us. Be mad with us. Shatter the ruined systems with us.
