Percy Jackson and the Olympians Review
Everyone has that moment where they fall in love with reading. That one second where you finally find that book you can’t put down. That world that you must escape to and ultimately day dream about 24/7. This book, and the whole series that follows gave me that moment. To this day, over a decade after I read this book initially, I go back and reread it. I have gotten to the point where I dissect every story arc and character growth sequence that I can. As a writer, I created a tik tok to help promote my work and even there I find myself constantly falling into being a Percy Jackson fan page obsessing over intricate details.
Now as much as this series is entertaining, no review would be complete without me discussing the societal implications as well. Rick Riordan makes it a point to include diversity in a way that truly makes every reader included. From the simple fact that demigods have dyslexia as a needed attribute to stay alive in battles to the extended backstories and diverse backgrounds of all the characters, Riordan seems to touch on every part of society. There is no forced diversity, however. He doesn’t include a POC character and then give them all the possible diverse characteristics. Nor does he make all the “diversity” belong to the side characters. When you read this book, you don’t feel forced into realizing that the author is trying to diversify the cast. Instead, you feel like you are living real life where diversity exists and is what makes our world a better place.
Lastly, I must touch on the topic of romance. Without giving out any spoilers, I must say that all the couples in this series are written in an extremely entertaining way and yet Riordan doesn’t succumb to the usual toxic romance trope to keep his readers entertained. This is a part of the book that I extremely appreciate since many young adult novels nowadays pass off toxicity as fun and normal, when in fact, being a good person should not be seen as, and is not, boring.
Thank you Rick Riordan for this masterpiece and all those that follow. I truly owe a lot of my passion for writing and skill in writing to you and reading your books.
P.S. As a fellow Greek Mythology lover, you made my childhood by making such an amazing series based on the myths.
