The Only Person That Can Bring Me Down Is Me And That’s Never In My Best Interest To Do So

At the end of the day, no action of another can harm me without my permission.

I have lived several years acknowledging this, but not always living by it.

It’s hard to do so. It’s hard to not take another’s word as truth and diminish our self image. It’s easy to automatically assume the worst is true.

But let’s think about it. It is never in our best interest to bring ourselves down. The other person might be right in that you might not be the best at something or they don’t agree with your style in some way, but is this really a negative reflection of you?

Why is it that every individual voice outside our own seems to hold so much weight on us. Yet, we completely ignore our own voice.

If someone told you that you’re not the best swimmer, there could be truth to it or there could be no basis for the claim. Regardless, our self worth should not be diminished by it.

If it’s true, then we either become a better swimmer or we simply recognize that at the moment it’s not a priority for us to be better.

Also, we we must acknowledge that to one person we might be bad, and to another we might be miles ahead (what they ruin their self image over).

We’re effectively working with a broken ladder that leads to nowhere. Every time we take a step forward, we start comparing ourselves and pushing ourselves down the ladder. Or we let that one comment break the rung we’re currently holding on to.

We shouldn’t though. We should keep climbing up regardless. Take in constructive criticism, but remember that if something feels like it’s pushing you down a ladder, it might not be constructive. It might just be destructive.

Stop worrying about negative inputs. They are never as true as you think they are. Even if you’re a bad swimmer, I guarantee it’s not as big of a deal as it feels like in your head.

We have a horrible habit of inflating ideas in our head which makes sense because society teaches us to value our own voice the least, but in many cases with society, we need to completely rework our brains to value our own voices the most.

At the end of the day, since your voice matters the most, only what you tell yourself can bring you down. You can choose to not accept the bad swimmer comment and move on. You can choose to take the bad swimmer as an input and output it as I’m currently learning to swim better. The latter does not bring you down. It lifts you up, and I feel like it’s more true than the blanket statement of being a bad swimmer.
